Francisco Mora-Catlett’s AfroHORN Residency
“Led by the drummer and composer Francisco Mora-Catlett, AfroHORN seeks a mystical but earthy vision of rhythm and folklore, inspired not only by Afro-Cuban music but also the Sun Ra Arkestra, in which Mr. Mora-Catlett played in the 1970s.” -The New York Times
Afro-Latino drummer Francisco Mora-Catlett & AfroHORN return to Zinc Bar to perform the music on their third album, At The Edge of The Spiral
featuring Aruan Ortiz (piano) • Rashaan Carter (bass)
Francisco Mora-Catlett (drums)
Román Díaz (percussion) • Sam Newsome (soprano)
+ Special Guest Bob Stewart (tuba)
With At The Edge of The Spiral, Mora-Catlett, a formidable composer and conceptualist, continues to map the secret paths that connect avant garde jazz to Cuban folklore, African mysticism and Latin American surrealism. AfroHORN’s live shows always generate buzz: a who’s who of jazz greats turn out to see them: famed bassist Henry Grimes, trumpeter Jack Walrath, saxophonists Donald Harrison and J.D. Allen and trombonist Steve Turre have jammed with the band at Jazz Standard • 2013 NYC Winter JazzFest • The Detroit Jazz Festival 2013 • Minton’s in Harlem and the 2017 NYC Winter Jazzfest.
None of this is surprising: Francisco Mora-Catlett has participated in some of the most exciting experiments in jazz history, ranging from Sun Ra to Max Roach’s M’Boom Percussion Choir. His AfroHORN ensemble unites diverse elements of the jazz experience with a multi-cultural and multi-generational lineup: the dazzling jazz veteran Sam Newsome on saxophone, AfroCuban percussion master Roman Diaz, rising stars Aruan Ortiz on piano and Rashan Carter on bass, and the celebrated tuba player Bob Stewart as the guest artist.
“This is going to be a non-stop thrill,” says Dita Sullivan, the’ producer of Jazz at the Crossroads. “All the cutting edge musicians, monsters of creativity, want to come to Zinc Bar, where they have complete artistic freedom, and time to develop their music in a residency. Zinc Bar is at the vortex of the most exciting music in the city – where you can see first rate artists playing with no inhibitions. It will be like the Onyx Club, back in the ’20s, when all the top musicians came to listen to each other and exchange ideas, in an atmosphere of anything goes.”
