ABOUT

“What Portinho brings to the dance is his ineffable good common sense, perfection in any tempo, restrained power, and an ability to shade, color and accent beats like few drummers in any category.” —Michael Nastos, AllMusic

Acclaimed Brazilian percussionist Portinho is back at Zinc with his trio featuring pianist Klaus Mueller and bassist Lincoln Goines.

Portinho is one of a kind. A native of Brazil, he moved to the United States in the early 1970s and has left his mark on everything he has been part of: the creator of a signature style of drumming and approach to music that has inspired generations of musicians. He has collaborated and recorded with an extensive list of premier artists, including Gato Barbieri, Harry Belafonte, Herbie Mann, Dom Salvador, Paquito D’Rivera, Astrud Gilberto, Tania Maria, Nancy Wilson, Mongo Santamaria, Michel Legrand, and Ron Carter. His group “Portinho Trio” formed in 2004 combines samba and modern jazz into unique arrangements using jazz classics and lesser-known works from the Brazilian songbook.
